Well, the first set of sessions in Nashville went amazingly well. A group of
musicians assembled in Phil Keaggy's disheveled basement studio and started
cooking. They listened to the vocals, keyboards, and various drum/bass/other
assorted tracks I had recorded in advance. Then they began to layer their
instruments into the songs.
It began with Ken Lewis on drums and percussion. Soon Phil
Keaggy, mad scientist that he is, was recording and throwing in samples on the fly,
while Justin Loucks, the engineer, contributed some very hip and creative
ideas. Underneath that trucker hat resides a very musically aware mind ...
Phil also grabbed his bass and started tracking with Ken. Jeremy Casella
(himself a talented Universal recording artist) offered some ideas to the
brew ... And all these different ideas were exactly right to me. It was a
mad, magical, vibey time. You can never plan it, but sometimes, if you are
very lucky, a team will actually become something much bigger than all the
individual parts.
The next day Ian Fitchuk brought his bag of tricks in and added some cool
and interesting keyboard sounds to the ones I had already laid. On the third
day, Phil added guitar and e-bow to some of the tracks, while Jeremy Casella
helped out with the engineering and even tracked a bit of guitar himself.
All in all we got four songs almost completed. We'll be getting back
together later this month to record some more. If you like you can check out
a little snippet of one of the songs ("Fast As I Can") on the
music page.
It's just a rough mix, and the vocal isn't a final, but I'm going to put it
up anyway, just for a limited time.
That's all for now --
Cheryl
